Arda – a fun and cosy tapestry crochet mittens pattern

arda mittens crochet pattern

The Arda Mittens are my first tapestry crochet mittens design. They come in five sizes ranging from small child right up to “extra large” adult, so you can make a pair for every special person in your life.

I used two colours to make my mittens but you could easily go up to three with a different colour for the cuff. One of my testers even used a different colour for the finger tips which looked fab.

The Arda Mittens

The Arda Mittens are made using (mainly) the extended dc (or extended sc in US terms) crochet stitch and tapestry crochet to create a really fun repeating pattern. They also have a lovely ribbed cuff which helps them to stay on and keeps out any draughts!

I used Hobbii Yarn’s Friends Extra Fine Merino yarn to make my mittens. This yarn is light, soft and really warm. It also comes in a beautiful range of colours.

The pattern includes full written instructions and explanations for how to do the techniques used in the mittens.  However, if you have any questions at all, please just send me an email and I’ll be happy to help.

The pattern details

Yarn

The Arda Mittens were made with Hobbii Friends Extra Fine Merino (100% merino wool; 4 ply; 165m / 50g ball). To make a pair of mittens in any size you would need one ball of each of two colours.

You could substitute for other 4 ply yarns. Wool-based yarns are great for warmth.

You could also go up to a DK yarn if you prefer, which would increase the size of the mitten by around 15% (depending on your tension).

Hook

I used a 3 mm hook to make the mittens with the above yarn.

Sizes

The mittens come in five sizes. The total length of the mittens, from the bottom of the cuff to the tip of the hand, for the five sizes are:

XS – 14.5cm

S – 19cm

M – 21cm

L – 24cm

XL – 27cm
