Step-by-step tutorials that explain the why, not just the what.

If you’re looking for clear crochet tutorials that help you build real confidence, you’re in the right place. I teach at a calm, unhurried pace — working through each step carefully and always explaining why something works, not just telling you what to do.

Crochet Colourwork

Tapestry Crochet

Tapestry crochet is one of my favourite techniques, especially for blankets and accessories. I’ve used it extensively in my own designs, so these tutorials are based on real, practical experience of managing tension, colour changes and yarn control over many projects. I cover everything from the basics of how the technique works, to hiding the carried yarn, preventing tangles, and following a colourwork chart.

  • An overview of how to work tapestry crochet
  • Using tapestry crochet with different stitch types
  • How to carry yarn up to the next round or row
  • How to hide the carried yarn
  • How to prevent yarns becoming tangled

Texture & Colour

Brioche Crochet

Brioche crochet creates a beautifully textured, stretchy fabric with strong visual contrast between colours.

Because brioche behaves differently from standard crochet, I take time to explain the stitch anatomy so you understand what’s happening — not just how to follow the steps mechanically.

  • The structure of brioche stitches
  • Working with two colours
  • Understanding how the fabric builds row by row

Joining Techniques

How you join motifs can completely change the look and feel of a blanket. Each method creates a slightly different finish — some give a flatter seam, others emphasise the shape of the motifs. In the tutorials, I explain when to use each approach, depending on the overall design.

  • Two different join-as-you-go methods for joining hexagons
  • A smooth and barely visible method for joining squares

Crochet Ribbing

I have a tutorial showing how to add crochet ribbing to a finished project using a join-as-you-go method. This technique is particularly useful for hats and garments, as it allows you to adjust tension and fit more precisely while keeping the edge neat and structured.

Getting Started Right

Foundation Stitches & Starting Techniques

Getting the first row or round of a project right makes a significant difference to the finished result. Foundation stitches give you a neat, even edge without a starting chain, while the magic ring creates a tight, clean centre point for motifs — I cover both here, including when and why I use them in my own designs.

A neat, even starting edge without a chain — improves drape and tension from the very first stitch.

The Magic Ring

A tight centre point for motifs — eliminates the bulk and gap of a chain ring. Essential for granny squares and hexagons.

About Catherine

I’m Catherine, the designer behind Catherine Crochets. I specialise in crochet blankets, with a particular love for tapestry crochet, colourwork and considered design.

I design all of my own patterns from concept through to final sample. I teach the techniques I use through both video and written tutorials and I also run occasional in-person workshops locally.

My aim is to help you build real confidence with your crochet — learning not just what to do, but why each step works the way it does.
