Three fun tapestry crochet hexagon blankets
If you’re looking for a fun new crochet project, why not try making one of these tapestry crochet hexagon blankets? Tapestry crochet makes it easy to create unique and colorful patterns, and there is something so satisfying about building up a blanket from hexagons.
In this post, I’ll show you three different designs you can choose from: the bright and fun Super Stars Blanket, the wintery but wonderfully snuggly Snow Storm Blanket, and the cool geometric Playroom Blanket.
All of the patterns include full written instructions as well as links to some handy video tutorials, so whether you’re a beginner or an experienced crocheter, there’s a hexagon blanket here for you!

Tapestry crochet hexagons
I love using tapestry crochet in hexagons. The rotational symmetry in each hexagon combined with the stunning result of repeating a simple pattern over a whole blanket can lead to some striking and beautiful blankets.
Six-point stars and snowflakes are of course natural choices to create in hexagons. However, the deceptively simple geometric pattern used in the Playroom Blanket adds up to create an amazing kaleidoscopic result that it’s hard to keep your eyes away from.
Tapestry crochet is also not as hard as many people might think. On the contrary, it’s really very simple and you only need to know two basic things:
- How to change colour (answer: on the last “pull through” of the previous stitch).
- How to crochet over the unused yarn (this is as easy as it sounds – you just run the unused yarn along the top of your stitches and make your new crochet stitches right over it).
However, to find out exactly how it’s done, read my Step By Step Guide to Tapestry Crochet or watch this Tapestry Crochet Video Tutorial.
Joining your hexagons together
I like using “join as you go” techniques to join my hexagons together as I love seeing the blanket grow as I make each hexagon. This method also has the advantage of creating fewer ends to weave in, which is always a bonus.

All three patterns explain exactly how to join your hexagons together as you go. However, if you prefer to use a different technique, such as sewing or crocheting your hexagons together at the end, then that is of course absolutely fine too.
Choosing your yarn and colours
One wonderful thing about making a crochet blanket is that you can choose the colours to suit your own tastes and the room in which you are going to use the blanket. Whether you prefer soft pastels, gentle neutrals, or bold brights, you can create a crochet blanket with whichever colours you like.
When it comes to choosing which type of yarn to use, for these blankets I would recommend using a DK weight yarn as that creates a nice blanket thickness and size of the hexagons.
The Super Stars Blanket was made using Stylecraft Special DK yarn, which is 100% acrylic. The Snow Storm Blanket also used a 100% acrylic yarn: Paintbox Simply DK. These are premium acrylic yarns which come in a wide range of colours, are not too expensive (important when you’re making a large blanket!) and are lovely and soft.

For the Playroom Blanket, I used a cotton-acrylic blend: Scheepjes Softfun. This blend of fibres means that it’s still really soft but, thanks to the cotton, it also has great stitch definition giving a really crisp outline to the geometric pattern.
However, feel free of course to experiment with different yarn weights and fibres and see what you can create.
