Gunther – a cosy tapestry crochet blanket
If you’re looking for a gorgeous cosy crochet blanket, the tapestry crochet Gunther Blanket might be just the thing.
The inspiration behind Gunther was a really simple idea but I was so pleased with how it turned out. Often, simple patterns can be so effective when repeated on a large scale.
The Gunther Blanket Pattern
The pattern was first published in issue 72 of Crochet Now magazine but is now available to buy separately from my Etsy and Ravelry stores.
The Gunther Blanket is made of 30 solid granny squares. Each square uses tapestry crochet to create a stunning repeating diamond pattern all over the blanket.
For maximum cosiness, Gunther also has a gorgeously squidgy ribbed border, which I absolutely love.
The pattern contains full written instructions and a chart for making the squares. It also includes links to some handy video tutorials. The pattern is provided in both UK and US crochet terms.
Yarn
I used Caron Simply Soft yarn, which is a lovely soft aran weight acrylic yarn. The blanket is made in Off White (4 balls) and Harvest Red (2 balls). Using an aran yarn means the blanket works up quite quickly and is really snuggly.
You could easily substitute this for other aran weight yarns, or even perhaps go down to a DK weight yarn for a slightly lighter blanket.

Hook
I used a 4 mm / size 7 hook.
Size
The finished blanket measures 89 cm x 109 cm. However, you could easily adjust this by making more or fewer squares.
Tapestry Crochet
The squares use the tapestry crochet technique to create the cool diamond pattern. If you’ve not tried tapestry crochet before, this could be the perfect pattern to get started with.
