The Down the Line Beanie
The Down the Line Beanie has a simple but hugely appealing design consisting of vertical stripes which converge up to the top.
It’s made using the highly addictive and totally gorgeous brioche crochet technique, which gives it a really neat and sumptuous texture.

The hat is worked in a single piece, starting with a band of ribbing which is joined to form a loop. The main part of the hat then continues working with brioche crochet in rounds from the ribbing, with decreases up to the top.
Whether you’re an experienced crocheter or a beginner who’s mastered the basics and is now looking for a bit more of a challenge, this pattern is designed to be enjoyed by all skill levels. With full written instructions, helpful tips, and a handy brioche crochet video tutorial, the pattern contains everything you need to create a gorgeous new beanie for your winter wardrobe.
The Pattern Details
Yarn
I used Hobbii Friends Extra Fine Merino yarn.
This is a fairly plump 4 ply yarn (Ravelry actually classes it as 5 ply) made of 100% merino wool. It’s really soft, cosy and smooth and comes in 50g (165m) balls.
I used two balls of my main colour (Light Gray) and 1 ball of the contrast colour (Dusty Rose).
Alternative Yarns
You could substitute the above yarn for another 4 or 5 ply yarn but just make sure you meet the gauge stated in the pattern and adjust your hook size if needed.
I would recommend opting for a nice soft, cosy yarn such as wool or a premium acrylic. A wool-acrylic blend would be a good option.
If you have a skein of hand-dyed 4 ply, that could look wonderful paired with a solid contrasting yarn.
Crochet Hook
I used a 3 mm hook to make the hat with the above yarn. I recommend making a test swatch before you start to check your gauge with that stated in the pattern, and adjust your hook size if needed.
Size
The hat comes in a single size which would fit an older child or adult. If you wanted to make it larger, you could simply use a thicker (e.g. DK) yarn and a larger hook.
Brioche Crochet
As you may already know, brioche crochet produces a sumptuous, stretchy, textured fabric and (importantly!) is much easier than it looks.
Not tried brioche crochet before? Don’t worry – I’ve filmed a video tutorial to show you exactly how it’s done. You can watch the tutorial here now.
I’ve also got a blog post all about brioche crochet here too.
