The Winter Star Blanket – A Tapestry Crochet Blanket Pattern
Some people look at this blanket and see stars. Others see snowflakes. I’ve never quite managed to settle it either way – which I actually quite like about this design.
The Winter Star is a tapestry crochet blanket worked in squares, with each square carrying a geometric motif that shifts depending on how you look at it. It was my second blanket built around tapestry crochet squares – the first was the Midnight Diamond Blanket – and this time I wanted something twinkling and a little wintry. Stars felt right.
The colourway I used is one I’m still very fond of: silver stars on a teal background, with a single round of copper at the very end of the border. That last round was something of an afterthought, but it turned out to be the detail that pulled everything together. The warmth of the copper against the cool teal and silver was just right.

What’s included in the pattern

It also includes links to video tutorials covering the tapestry crochet techniques you’ll need – useful if you’re new to working with two colours.
New to tapestry crochet? This is a good place to start
Tapestry crochet is a colourwork technique where you carry the yarn you’re not using along the back of your work, crocheting over it as you go. The result is a fabric with a clean, graphic design on the front and a neatly encased float on the back – no weaving in as you switch colours.
The Winter Star squares are a gentle introduction to the technique. Each motif is small, uses only two colours, and is worked in straightforward double crochet (US) / treble crochet (UK) stitches – so there’s no unfamiliar stitch work to get to grips with alongside the colourwork. You’re building one manageable square at a time, which means you can stop, check your work, and feel confident before moving on.
If you’d like a broader grounding in the technique before you begin – covering everything from reading charts to managing your yarn – the tapestry crochet hub has guides and tutorials to take you through it step by step.

A note on the yarn
Stylecraft Special Aran is a good choice for this kind of blanket. It’s 100% acrylic, holds its colour well, and the aran weight gives the squares a satisfying density without making the blanket stiff or heavy. The colour range is wide enough that you could work this pattern in almost any combination – though I’d suggest keeping the contrast fairly high between the motif colour and the background, so the star reads clearly.
