Crochet Tutorials

Step-by-step Video & Written Guides

If you’re looking for clear, steady crochet tutorials to help you build confidence, you’re in the right place.

I’m Catherine, a crochet designer based in Surrey in the UK. I specialise in thoughtfully designed blankets, colourwork and accessible techniques, and I teach in the same way I design - calmly, clearly and with plenty of explanation about why something works, not just what to do.

On this page you’ll find all of my crochet tutorials gathered in one place. Some are step-by-step video tutorials on YouTube, some are written guides on the blog, and many include both.

You can explore them by technique below, or scroll down for full project tutorials.

If you’re particularly interested in blanket-making, you may also enjoy my
Crochet Blanket Resource Hub.

And for written stitch instructions with video support, you can visit my
Crochet Stitch Library.

CROChet COLOURWORK

Tapestry Crochet

Tapestry crochet is one of my favourite techniques, especially for blankets and structured accessories. I’ve used it extensively in my own designs, so these tutorials are based on real, practical experience of managing tension, colour changes and yarn control over larger projects.

If you’d like a complete overview of the technique, including detailed explanations, tips and links to all related resources, you can visit my dedicated Tapestry Crochet Guide here:

Tapestry Crochet – Complete Guide & Resources

On this tutorials page, you’ll find my step-by-step video guidance covering:

  • An overview of how to work tapestry crochet
  • Using tapestry crochet with different stitch types
  • How to carry yarn neatly inside your stitches
  • How to carry yarn up to the next round or row
  • How to hide the carried yarn
  • How to prevent yarns becoming tangled

Tension and yarn choice make a real difference with tapestry crochet. I usually recommend slightly smaller hook than usual and selecting your yarn carefully depending on your particular project. These details are discussed throughout the tutorials so you can adjust confidently for your own projects.

Brioche Crochet

Brioche crochet creates a beautifully textured, stretchy fabric with strong visual contrast between colours.

My brioche tutorials guide you through:

  • The structure of brioche stitches
  • Working with two colours
  • Understanding how the fabric builds row by row

Because brioche behaves differently from standard crochet, I take time to explain the stitch anatomy so you understand what’s happening structurally, not just mechanically.

Joining Techniques

How you join motifs can completely change the look and feel of a blanket.

I have tutorials covering:

  • Two different join-as-you-go methods for joining hexagons
  • A smooth and barely visible method for joining squares

Each method creates a slightly different finish. Some give a flatter seam, others emphasise the shape of the motifs. In the tutorials, I explain when to use each approach, depending on the overall design.

Crochet Ribbing

I also have a tutorial showing how to add crochet ribbing to a finished project using a join-as-you-go method.

This technique is particularly useful for hats and garments, as it allows you to adjust tension and fit more precisely while keeping the edge neat and structured.

You can watch the video tutorial or follow the written guide here:

Foundation Stitches & Starting Techniques

Getting the first row or round of a project right makes a significant difference to the finished result.

You’ll find tutorials here for:

  • Foundation stitches (including foundation single crochet and foundation double crochet)
  • The magic ring

Foundation stitches are particularly helpful when you want a neat, even edge without a starting chain. I explain when I choose to use them in my own designs and why they can improve the drape of a project.

The magic ring is a great way of creating a tight centre point for your motifs, without the bulk of a chain ring.

Crochet Stitches for Blankets

Through my “Quick Stitches for Crochet Blankets” series and growing Stitch Library, I share individual stitch tutorials that work especially well for blankets.

Each stitch includes guidance on texture and fabric density as well as tips for achieving the best results.

You can explore the full written stitch library here, which also includes links to the video tutorial for each stitch:

Full Project Tutorials

Alongside technique tutorials, I also create complete project tutorials.

These include:

Each project tutorial walks you through the entire process step by step and comes with a free written pattern too.

Full project tutorials are designed to be crocheted alongside. The pacing is steady and clear so you can follow comfortably without feeling rushed.

You can browse all of my video tutorials, including for projects, on my YouTube channel here:

  • Working at your own pace
  • Printing instructions
  • Referring back to specific sections easily

You can find written tutorials and guides across the blog, and many are linked from the Blanket Resource Hub and Tapestry Crochet Page.
