About the Blanket
A cosy celebration of Christmas
Santa’s Workshop is a free Christmas crochet blanket pattern, designed in collaboration with Sirdar as part of a crochet-along that brought together thousands of makers from around the world.
The finished blanket is a whimsical celebration of Christmas — featuring a nice list, a train, presents, toys, and a host of festive decorations, all worked in a variety of stitches and techniques. It’s a genuinely fun project to make, and the kind of blanket that becomes a family favourite, year after year.
The pattern comes in six parts, with video tutorials for each section to guide you through. Whether you’re relatively new to crochet or have been making for years, the tutorials clearly demonstrate each technique as it comes up.

The Design Story
How the blanket came together
If you’d like to see how the blanket came together, there’s a vlog that follows the making of the final sample — from the moment the yarn arrived through to the finished blanket. Along the way, I talk through the design process: how the concept developed, the decisions that shaped it, and what it was like to bring it all together.
It’s a nice watch if you’re about to start making the blanket yourself, or if you’re simply curious about what goes into designing a project like this one.
Make it at your own pace
No schedule, no pressure
The pattern and tutorials are all freely available and will remain so — there’s no time pressure or schedule to keep up with. Many people find it a lovely project to work through in the run-up to Christmas, but there’s nothing to stop you starting it at any time of year. It’s particularly satisfying to have a finished blanket ready to bring out each December.
A few things worth knowing
Skill level. The blanket is designed to be accessible to all levels of crocheter. The video tutorials demonstrate each stitch and technique clearly, so even if you encounter something new, you won’t be working it out alone.
Yarn. The official yarn is Hayfield Bonus DK from Sirdar. If you’d prefer to use yarn you already have, other standard DK yarns will work well — just check your tension against the pattern before you start to be sure you’ll have enough.
Pattern format. The written pattern is split into six parts, in both UK and US crochet terms. It’s free to access via the Sirdar website.
