The Sorcha Cowl – A Free Brioche Crochet Cowl Pattern

The Sorcha Cowl – A Vibrant and Textured Free Brioche Crochet Cowl Pattern

Introducing the Sorcha Cowl – a vibrant and cozy crochet accessory that will add a pop of colour to any outfit. It’s made using the brioche crochet technique, which I’m rather taken with at the moment. This gives it a unique and sumptuous ribbed texture on the outside and an astonishingly smooth feel on the inside – perfect for a cowl!

The Sorcha Cowl

This brioche crochet cowl is not only fun and quick to work up, but it also has a gorgeous texture and is incredibly smooth on the inside. It’s worked in the round, with each stripe consisting of three rounds of brioche crochet.

The cowl is finished off with a round of crab stitch (AKA reverse single crochet) at each end, giving a neat and attractive finish.

It’s a great opportunity to explore new color combinations and try out a new technique. In fact, it’s the perfect introduction to brioche crochet.

The Sorcha Cowl is made with DK yarn and is great for using up any leftover scraps you may have lying around, making Sorcha an excellent project for stash-busting.

Whether you’re an experienced crocheter or a beginner looking looking to develop your skills, this pattern is designed to be enjoyed by crocheters of all levels. It contains full written instructions with detailed pattern notes explaining how to work brioche crochet.

The Pattern Details

Yarn

I used Hobbii’s Highland Wool yarn to make my cowl. This is a DK weight yarn made of 100% Peruvian highland wool. It’s really soft and warm and is available in a fantastic range of shades.

I used less than one 50 g / 1.75 oz ball of each of the following colors:

  • Night Sky (11)
  • Wild Berry (35)
  • Wintergreen (20)
  • Chili (32)

You could substitute this yarn for another DK (light worsted) weight yarn. You could also use more or fewer colors if you prefer.

Crochet Hook

I used a 3.5 mm hook. I recommend making a test swatch with your chosen yarn before you start and adjust your hook size (or stitch count per round) if needed. The pattern will work for any even number of stitches per round.

Gauge

20 stitches x 12 rows = 10 cm measured over the brioche stitch pattern defined in the pattern.

If your gauge is different to that stated in the pattern you could either adjust your hook size or adjust the number of stitches per round (and number or rows) accordingly.

Size

The finished cowl has a height of 20 cm and a circumference of 57 cm. However, this can easily be adjusted to whichever height and circumference you prefer by adjust the number of stitches per round to any even number of stitches.

Brioche Crochet

The unique and attractive stitch pattern and texture of this cowl is achieved using brioche crochet. If you’ve not tried it before, have a look at this page which explains in it more detail. However, essentially it consists of overlapping rows of stitches formed using alternating chains and front post stitches.

The Sorcha Cowl uses brioche crochet to form its unique and attractive texture.
