Vita – a gorgeous leafy crochet blanket pattern

Have you ever fancied dozing peacefully under a blanket of leaves?  Well, now you can, with my new Vita blanket – a beautifully leafy crochet blanket pattern.

Vita is my latest tapestry crochet blanket design: a square blanket covered with a fun scattering of fresh green leaves.

The pattern was first published in issue 80 of Crochet Now magazine, in March 2022, but it is now available as a single pattern on Etsy, Ravelry and LoveCrafts.

The Vita Blanket

Vita is essentially one giant solid granny square, with a leafy crochet colourwork pattern. I used two shades of green for my leaves, but you could use more or fewer colours if you prefer.

The leaf pattern uses tapestry crochet, but (similarly to my Hestia Blanket) it uses some slightly different stitches to create a lovely smooth outline to the leaf shapes.  Don’t worry though, there are links to video tutorials in the pattern, and also below, showing you exactly how to do this.

I used a cotton yarn to make the Vita blanket and I think it would make a great picnic blanket. However, if you wanted something warmer to snuggle under, you could always switch to an acrylic or wool yarn, and maybe even choose some gorgeous autumn tones for the leaves as well.

The pattern details

Yarn

The Vita blanket was made with King Cole CottonSoft DK (100% cotton; DK; 210 m / 100 g ball):

• 5 x 100 g balls of Ecru (711)
• 1 x 100 g balls of Sage (1576)
• 1 x 100 g balls of Lime (1601)

I found this cotton yarn to be lovely and soft and smooth. It gives great stitch definition for the colourwork parts and, unlike some cotton yarns, it didn’t split when I was crocheting with it.

You could substitute the yarn for other DK yarns, including acrylic or wool yarns, or even go up to an aran weight if you like. Alternatively, going down to a 4-ply or sport weight yarn would also work but would of course result in a smaller blanket.

Hook

I used a 4 mm hook to make the blanket with the above yarn. You might want to choose a smaller or larger hook if you use a different yarn weight.

Size

The finished blanket measured 120 x 120 cm.
