The Lighten Up Beanie- A Fun and Cozy Crochet Pattern
The Lighten Up Beanie is a really quick fun project that will keep you or your loved one warm and cosy. It can be made in endless colour combinations to suit your taste, outfit, or mood.
Using just small amounts of DK yarn in two contrasting colors, this is the perfect weekend crochet project.
The beanie uses simple tapestry crochet to create the colorwork pattern. This method is explained in the pattern along with links to some handy tapestry crochet video tutorials which you can use if you’re new to this technique.

The Pattern Details
Yarn
I used We Are Knitters: The Baby Wool to make my beanie. This is a DK weight yarn made of 100% baby alpaca. It’s really soft and warm and comes in a beautiful array of colors.
Each ball weighs 50g and contains 112m of yarn.
I used:
- 2 balls of color A (Spotted Blue or Canyon Rose)
- 1 ball of color B (Spotted Mauve or Natural)
If you would like to substitute for a different yarn, I’d suggest looking at other DK weight wool, alpaca or acrylic yarns.
Crochet Hooks
I used 4.0mm and 4.5mm crochet hooks.
Gauge
16 stitches and 15 rows over 10 cm in exsc (US terms) or exdc (UK terms) in the round with a 4mm hook.
Size
The finished beanie is quite stretchy and would fit an older child or adult.
The brim has a circumference of 50cm (unstretched).
The beanie has a height of 22cm with the ribbing turned up, and 30cm without the ribbing turned up.
Techniques
The beanie uses scBLO (US) or dcBLO (UK) stitches to make the ribbing.
Then, the main part of the hat is made with extended single crochet (US) or extended double crochet (UK) stitches with a few rounds of tapestry crochet.
All stitches and techniques are explained in the pattern along with links to some accompanying video tutorials.
This project would be suitable for a beginner with some experience of the basic stitches, or an intermediate crocheter looking to try tapestry crochet for the first time.
